Who AM I?

I am Maz Downer, Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor. I am a Sport and Exercise Scientist, an elite level hockey player for 25+ years and a PE teacher for 20 years. I’m also Chief Operations Officer in our crazy home and Mum to two sports mad kids.

I am a new business founder, forging a second career to create my own sense of purpose in life, to capture the passion I have for improving the health, wellbeing and fitness of others.

And now I am a Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer and Level 3 Pre and Postnatal Exercise Instructor and I absolutely want to help you Shift-It!

Why Me?

I understand that not everyone finds exercise easy to engage with. The experience I have gained from getting 1000’s of school children to Shift-It through a 20 year Physical Education teaching career, alongside junior elite hockey coaching, means that I have the tools and techniques to find the best means of sourcing, securing and sustaining your engagement.

I have spent over 25 years of my life Shifting-It on the pitch. Playing elite level National League Hockey, putting in many hours of physical training each week to build my mental resilience to sustain the highs and lows of European Club competitions, Cup Finals, Premier League campaigns, I had to shift mindset and body to recover from two ACL injuries in 2018 and 2021 to now play at England Masters level, winning European Gold in 2023.

You may think this is madness, but I have always loved the training.  I am fascinated by how the body reacts to and changes as a result of training, and how that defines the level of achievement and outcomes on the pitch.

I GET IT


Being a working mum, I understand the modern day struggles to maintain a fitness routine in a life that is regulated by drop-off and pick-up times, appointments, work schedules and deadlines, social pressures and family engagements.   I shifted-It to overcome the birth of two children, get back on the pitch, through the working day and so it is my priority to understand your situation and provide realistic solutions that help you Shift-It towards achieving your outcome.

HOW WILL WE DO IT?


I use scientific and factual methods to plan outcome-based fitness strategies, and then co-create engaging workouts to meet those outcomes. 
 
There are no gimmicks, shortcuts or quick fixes, just the Shift-It science, my leadership and your commitment to the effort needed to create change.
 
My sports science degree, high level sport experience and personal trainer qualification gives me the insight into how to get the best out of you. You are unique; therefore, I believe you need a bespoke programme, personalised to suit your body, your commitment and the outcomes you want to achieve.  We will do this using a variety of challenging and engaging exercises to shift you out of your comfort zone, to unlock the untapped potential inside of you.
