Shift-It Fitness run post-natal classes in Mortimer, Berkshire.  Our classes are run by Maz Downer who is a qualified Level 3 Pre and post-natal Exercise Instructor, Level 3 Personal Trainer, and Nutrition advisor.

I get it, mamas, you feel like your core’s gone AWOL and a decent sleep is a distant memory.  Those early days are a whirlwind of cuddles and chaos, where exercise can feel like a luxury, not a necessity.  But trust me, moving your body is the magic potion you need to boost your energy, mood, and confidence, all while building strength for those endless baby cuddles.

I’m Maz, a mum of two, former PE teacher for 20 years, and yes, a national league hockey player with Reading.  But now, as a Level 3 Post-Natal Fitness Instructor, my passion is helping new mums like you to re-energise your bodies, regain your strength, and rediscover how a healthy body supports a healthy mind.

We have tried to write the more detailed information below in a straightforward manner that is hopefully easy to understand.  From personal experience we recognise that this can be an extremely sensitive, nervous and anxious time for mamas, for all sorts of reasons, so please, if there is anything you are not quite sure about, no question is too silly to ask, please do not think twice about making contact to ask it.

What will the classes involve?

Our classes are specifically designed to be appropriate for all abilities from ladies brand new to exercise through to experienced exercisers; and classes will be tailored to your individual fitness needs and ability.

Classes will include cardio-vascular fitness as well as resistance training using therabands.  A theraband is essentially a massive elastic band; colour coded across various resistance strengths, from low resistance, (i.e., easy to use) through to high resistance. 

Post-natal classes will have a particular focus on (1) improving your core stability and (2) pelvic floor exercises to strengthen and rehabilitate the key areas that provide support through pregnancy and childbirth.

To enable Shift-It Fitness to give you the highest level of care, we will (confidentially) take detailed information about many aspects of your pregnancy and your birth and we will continue to monitor you throughout your time with us to ensure the training programme is right for you and optimising your recovery from birth.

We recommend bringing plenty of water and wearing comfortable, light clothing.  You will also need to bring your own exercise mat. There are toilets, baby changing mats and pushchair/ buggy parking.  For the post-natal classes you can keep your baby as close to you as you need, including having your babe in arms/sling.  



Classes take place at Mortimer Community Centre. RG7 3SW.  

To enable you to get the most out of our programme, we expect members to aim to attend weekly for the duration of their booking period. After the free taster session, classes are pre-booked and pre-paid. 

Our ultimate goal is for you to have a happy, healthy post-natal period, supporting your mental health and wellbeing throughout.

WhY EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT AFTER HAVING YOUR BABY?

Exercising after having your baby should improve your physical and mental wellbeing, and the benefits include:

  • Restoring muscle strength and firming your body 
  • Improved weight management and body image
  • Reduced back and pelvic pain
  • Reduced stress, improved mood and sleep
  • Lower risk of post-natal depression, and
  • Better pelvic floor function (reduced problems with incontinence and improved sexual function). 

Once you have had your baby you can come to a post-natal class from 6 weeks if you have had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery. 
You should wait until 8-10 weeks if you have had a caesarean.

To ensure you are safe to start exercising with us you will be asked to complete and return a medical form before your first class.  Our post-natal classes are generally suitable until your baby is on the move.

Once you complete your post-natal classes we will discuss options for your ongoing programme of exercise, including other Shift-It Fitness group exercise classes on offer and personal training.
